Now That Big Cable is About to Own Hulu
« on: February 04, 2016, 11:05:38 AM »
Time Warner wants Hulu to stop TV shows airing the next day. A DVR/HTPC is a monthly fee free solution!

TimeWarner Inc wants to buy the remaining 25% ownership of Hulu. As a condition of sale, they want Hulu to stop airing shows the day after they play on network TV. Instead they want Hulu to be just like Netflix and wait until the entire season is over before the shows are available to streamers.

Hulu is already partially owned by Big Cable and Television Media Companies. Current owners are 21st Century Fox, The Walt Disney Co, and Comcast Corp. Time Warner Inc not to be confused with Time Warner Cable which used to be owned by Turner Broadcasting until it was sold and spun off as a separate company in 2009. Time Warner Turner Broadcasting has channels like Cartoon Network, TNT, TBS, Warner Bros. studios, HBO and TruTV.

If TimeWarner became another partial owner of Hulu, it probably would not be a big deal. Except, they have one clause written in their deal that has streamers seeing red. This could cause many subscribers to drop Hulu altogether and go elsewhere.

As part of the purchase agreement, Time Warner wants Hulu to be like Netflix and wait for an entire season of current shows to be over before they are available to Hulu subscribers. This was really the best thing about Hulu, since they don't have as much content as Netflix or Amazon Video.

By doing away with the one thing that makes Hulu great, it will pretty much kill Hulu as we know it.
This could be big cable's diabolical plan all along. Hulu and other streaming services are siphoning off cable subscribers and media providers profits at a record pace. Simply put, they make more money from advertising to cable TV customers than they do with streaming.

Instead of fully embracing and adapting to streaming technology. Big Cable and the Media Industry would rather keep fighting and squeezing every last ounce out of the status quo they can.

TV Antenna and DVR to The Rescue

You can bet antenna and DVR sales will go through the roof if this Hulu deal goes through and Time Warner get's their way.

Most all the same shows Hulu airs the next day, are able to be viewed the same day by an antenna. Click here to learn more about antennas and check to see which channels are available for your location.

Antennas offer Free Network TV channels in high quality HD. The picture quality is even better than if you watched the same channels with cable or Satellite. Channels you can expect to receive with an antenna are ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, PBS, CW and a few more.

A TV DVR can easily be made from a spare PC. Alternatively you can use PlayON to record shows from internet streaming channels. Learn more about PlayOn... here

We used an old i5 Mac Mini along with an HDHomeRun to create a great DVR. Not only does it work perfect for recording live TV, having a small computer with an HDMI output that attaches right to your television gives you access to many Internet Streaming TV channels that you could not watch on Roku. A DVR/HTPC is just another great addition to a cord cutters toolbox.

Three Components Needed for a DVR
1. A small, quiet computer (A large loud one with a long HDMI cable will work as well. ;))
2. Home Theater Software
3. HD ATSC TV Tuner

Best Small Form Factor Home Theater PCs

Intel Nuc

If you love to tinker or build your own. The Intel Nuc has many models to choose from. For Home Theater use, a Core i5 is the sweet spot. It does not run as warm or use as much power as an i7 and still works great as a DVR or to run Kodi, can transcode Plex and run PlayOn's software.

Alienware Alpha

If you are a gamer, the Alpha mini PC comes with it's own game controller. The included HDMI output also makes it a perfect HTPC/Digital Video Recorder PC for your TV.

Windows 8 and 10 no longer come with any Media Center software. Your best option is to install Kodi which has a ton of great plug-ins for watching many TV shows and Movies online. Kodi will also record and time shift live TV from an ATSC tuner.

Mac Mini

The Mac Mini is perfect for those that would like a turn key home theater computer solution. It also requires less updating, virus scanning/patching and fiddling than a Windows computer. PlayOn will not run on a Mac, although Plex works flawlessly.

Mac users will need to also get the excellent EyeTV software to record live network TV. It can schedule and record your shows manually so no additional monthly fee is required. This software is easier to setup and maintain than Kodi.

ATSC TV Tuners

ATSC TV Tuners will take the signal from your antenna,  send it to a computer where it can be recorded for later playback, paused or instantly replayed. This is the final piece needed to build your HomeTheater PC/DVR.

We have been very happy with our HDHomeRun Network Tuner. Unlike a tuner that fits inside a PC, this small box hooks into a Router or Switch on your home network. Your antenna plugs into the back. It comes with two tuners so you can split your antenna connection and record two different shows at once.

When Hulu no longer offers the shows and series you want in a timely manner, a Home Theater PC/DVR may be the perfect monthly fee free alternative solution.

Netflix and Amazon Video are two of Hulu's competitors that offer much more content.

Time Warner Inc. and Time Warner Cable are different companies, so it is not big cable who is trying to buy Hulu.

Thank you Rene, I stand corrected.  :-[

They used to be the same until Time Warner Cable was sold off in 2009 as a separate company. Updated the article to reflect this.  Appreciate you catching this.  :)

Big Cable Comcast already owns a 25 percent stake of Hulu...

James, Playon is media software much like Plex except it can actually record from Internet channels. Take a look at this post to learn more about what it can do.

I think the software that was mentioned to for recording live TV from an antenna was Kodi for Windows which also works with Android boxes and Linux. And Eye TV for Macs. Playon does not record live TV from an antenna. It records Internet streaming channels directly.
